  From Julia to B.P.Hasdeu

Paris, November 17, 1887 «So, I’m eighteen years old, and I swear! I regret. I don’t regret my seventeen years, but my sixteen! Ah! I will never be sixteen again! And I was sixteen for so little, only for twelve months. I’ve just tasted thi and they have already flown away, that’s why I’m so confused – and I’m very bored of being eighteen”. “In spite of your insistence, in spite the wise advices of Doctor Percheron, in spite of mother's cries, I go to sleep at midnight and wake up at six o’clock in the morning”.

          Paris, January 23, 1888 “Even if I hadn’t exams to pass, I wouldn’t work less ».

Paris, March 22, 1888 «About giving up my studies and coming back to the country before graduation, no way. I won’t do it, even if have to die, and no human power can force me. I haven’t worked all my childhood and youth to stop right when I’m close to the harbor. I don’t want such a life; not because I care about the diplomas, I’m not such a person and you know that. But once in the battle, I won’t retreat in the middle of the fight; also, I like this kind of work and I will never give up, for anything in the world ».

Paris, April 1888 «I’m still alive and I will never give up this work, as long as blood is still flowing though my veins and life is still breathing in my chest».
